 请协助苗夷教会的神学院

我亲爱的母会,

我应该对你说点什么呢? 我不知道当我回到自己的国家时我该做些什么, 因为你们对我非常慈爱。我倾尽所有也找不到一句话足够表达对你的感谢,所以我只能感谢上帝给我们预备了如此美善的教会。我在英国待了两年,见过很多奇妙的事, 最奇妙的是教会奇妙的爱。你的慈爱和善举深深感动了我, 所以我下定决心把最好的献给我们亲爱的阿爸父。我想请你们为我和我的国家祈祷, 而我们也会同样为亲爱的英格兰祈祷。我期望中国能像我一样热爱英格兰,英格兰也热爱中国,而英国和中国在一起,热爱耶稣。

我即将回到自己的祖国,但我把我许多的爱留在英格兰,我永远不会忘记我亲爱的朋友。我在美丽如仙境般的英格兰度过了一段很快乐的时光。你送我去伯明翰传教士学院,这给了我极大地幸福, Happy Kingsmead!我在那里学习了一年,学到了很多有用的知识,现在我认识了很多人。学校有很多同工,我们来自不同的差会:有卫斯理教会、始初循道会、教友会、圣公会、还有派我过来的圣道公会。我们学校的学生不仅来自英国,也来自其他国家:瑞典、挪威、荷兰、丹麦、瑞士、印度、中国、马达加斯加。我和他们都熟识也很爱他们。我们肤色不同,服饰不同,语言不同;但我们有同一位上帝,我们心灵相通;我们都是亲密的弟兄姊妹,一同住在世界大家庭里;这是我在心爱的英格兰学到的最重要的事情了。

大学毕业后,传教委员会给了我一个很好的的机会,去游历各地的教会,去结交许多的朋友,去感受你们奇妙的爱。现在你们派遣我亲爱的朋友苏慕才女士和我一起回中国。母会给了我所有的快乐,我已无法用语言表达,唯愿上帝赐福给你们所有人。

A letter from Miss Li Shuang Mei

My DEAR MOTHER CHURCH,

WHAT shall I say to you? I don't know what I shall do when I go back to my own country,because you have been too kind to me. I have no words enough to say thank-you,so 1 will thank God for giving us this kind Mother Church. I have been in England two years, and I have seen many wonderful things,but the most wonderful thing is the great love of the Church. All your kindness and your good influence have moved my heart,,so I have made up my mind I will do my best for our dear Heavenly Father all my life.I want you to pray for me and for my country, and we will pray for dear England. I want China to love England as I do, and England to love China, and all together love Jesus Christ.

I am going back to my home, but I leave plenty of love in England, and I will never forget my dear friends.I have had a very happy time in beautiful, fairy England. It gave me great happiness when you sent me to the Birmingham Missionary College, Happy Kingsmead! I have studied there for one year; and have learnt many useful things.I know many people now.We had people from different missionary societies in our College: Wesleyan,Primitive Methodist,Friends,Church of England and I United Methodist. And not only English people come to our College, but some from other countries,Sweden,Norway,Holland,Denmark, Switzerland,India,China,Madagascar.I know them all very well,and I love them very much.We only have different skin different,different clothes, different language;we all have the same God, and the same heart;we are all dear brothers and sisters, one big family in the world;that is the great thing I have learnt in dear England.

After College the Missionary Committee gave me a very good opportunity to go round to the Churches, to know many friends,and to see your wonderful love.Now you are sending my dear friend Miss Squire back to China with me.The Mother Church has given all happiness to me I don’t know what to say, only God bless you all.

王樹德先生的告別和呼求(英文)

 Mr. Hudspeth’s Farewell and Appeal.


The REV, W. H.HUDSPETH,B.A.,writes me :

“I’m on the S.S.‘Delta,’ journeying for a second time to China,to the land of my adoption.The voyage promises to be perfectly beautiful.The sea is as calm as a mill-pond,the sky is blue and clear,and the sun is gloriously warm.All on board are basking in its rays.

"I'm Not Happy."

“But I’m not happy—in spite of the sun my heart is chilled.I’m sorry that it should be,but somehow to-day I'm a wee bit down-hearted.I cannot help it.My own loved Church seems to have failed me.She is sending me back to China alone.Twelve years ago there were three of us in Miao work.During these twelve years,chapels,schools and members have grown with extraordinary rapidity,and to deal with all this greatly increased work our staff has been reduced.We are two now,and one of the two,Mr.Parsons,must stay at home on a well-earned furlough.Men,both lay and clerical,have listened to the story of my children of the hills,and they have shaken my hand and said,Ah,if I were ten years younger,I would go with you,Other men,and women too,have shaken me by the hand and said,Ah,if I were elder I would go with you’—but no one has come. Now I sit in my cabin and muse over those handshakes and fair words.Were they only handshakes and fair words? I hope not.But staring me in the face is the fact that, in spite of urgent appeals no man who has finished his college course has come forward and offered to accompany me.Many have said that if things had been different they would have come. Always there has been that if,and no one has come.

"Disappointed in Their Mother."

“My people in China speak of the Home Church as the Mother Church, and when I see my children of the hills I shall need to tell them that we cannot mother them.Some of the preachers will walk fifteen days to meet me,and when we are nearing Stone-gateway,the men,women and kiddies will hurry forward to greet me,and one of the first questions they will ask is, ‘Have you come alone, teacher? Hasn't the Mother Church sent anyone to help you? ’ Some of the new River Miao will come to greet me.They will ask for a teacher.I shall remember the handshakes of men and women in the homeland.I shall know that were it not for a great if,someone would be with me,but I shall only be able to look at my Miao people,say little,and feel bad.I wonder if some day my loved Church will understand that she is losing opportunities which will never, never, never come .again. "This is a strange farewell,but it is the only one I can write.To all my friends—Good-bye.

 I most earnestly commend that pathetic appeal to our young men at our Victoria Park College, to all our ministers on probation., and to every minister and layman under 32 years of age. It is pathetic that days which have seen a most heroic spirit of adventure and sacrifice on the part of our young men for King and country and fatherland should not witness the manifestation of at least" a like spirit on behalf of the Lord Jesus and the Miao whom He loves and has redeemed.

Our Church On Its Trial.

In regard to Yunnan,our Church is on its trial; our young men and, women are on•their trial too.The opportunity in that wonderful hill country is unparalleled in China.I question whether it is equalled in any country. It is an opportunity of serving ancient but still virile tribes,with an incalculable future before them.It is an opportunity of making disciples,not of individuals only,but of a nation.It is an opportunity which is fast reaching Shakespeare's “tide in the affairs of men.” “Taken at the flood”it will lead on to immeasurable blessedness for vast tribes and peoples.“Omitted” all the voyage of their life and all the voyage of our life as a missionary people in Yunnan will be bound about with “shallows and miseries.”And this will be true of us not only as a missionary people in Yunnan.It will be true of us as a missionary people at home.Like causes will produce like effects.Non-use will mean loss not only to China,but at home:for the lack of the spirit of Christ-like daring to see and seize opportunities for extending the Kingdom of God there,will inevitably mean the lack of the same spirit at home.“Take therefore the talent from him and give to him that hath five talents.For unto every one that bath shall be given,and he shall have abundance:but from him that bath not shall be taken that which he bath.”

What Hinders ?

If it be asked,Why does not our Church spring to the occasion? there is a prior question,Am I spring to the occasion? For churches are aggregates of individuals.What the whole is,is determined by what the parts are. Each of us counts in our Church;each of us helps or hinders;in this case each of us is now determining, and each of us in the tomorrows will determine,whether this haunting appeal of one of our most gifted young ministers is to die on the air unanswered,or whether it is to receive a worthy response.Each of us has this grave' responsibility,I say.For the problem facing us in Yunnan is two-fold—lack of men and lack of means. The latter all of us can remedy,whether we be young or old.We could remedy it instantly if we would settle that we will not spend on our personal pleasures more than we are giving to the support of efforts for the promotion of our Lord's Kingdom at home and abroad.Surely that is not too much to ask—that we shall give as much to please Jesus as we give to please ourselves,that we shall at least love Him as much as we love ourselves.If every United Methodist gave systematically on that principle,we should not want for money to enable us to seize every opportunity which is especially fronting us in China and Africa and in our beloved Homeland.The special £30,000 Fund appeal would be completely responded to in a few months.

Our Greatest Need.

We need a bigger income for our Missionary Funds.But it is sad to think that our need is of something. more vital,more essential,more priceless,namely,men and women who hear once more the pathetic, ever-recurring Divine call, “Whom shall I send and who will 'go for us?”and respond as the young Isaiah did, “Here am I, send me.”We refuse to believe that the young Christians of to-day are less loyal to their Lord than their forefathers were.We fear that in this matter the old plaint hold’s true,“My people do not know;My people do not consider.”Here evil is wrought for want of thought,not for want of heart.Motives for missionary work that prompted some of the older missionaries may not appeal to the younger generation,but if they will but think the matter out they will find that the new motives which will emerge.are as imperious,are as Divine, are as all-compelling as ever the old motives were,and should have at 'least the same sequel in offers for missionary service,if the opportunity is given.And the old imperative still holds good.“Go ye into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature” is binding upon all of us.The question is not,Shall I obeyIt is,Why should I not obey?The position is, I must go unless my Lord says to me definitely,“This quest is not for thee.” And none of us should regard ourselves as freed from the common obligation until we have heard our Lord free us in the solemn quiet of our secret chamber communion with Him.I want to ask every young Christian who reads this,Have you received your Saviour’s permission not. to go as a missionary to china or Africa?Please pause and search your heart relentlessly till you receive a definite answer.

In regard to Mr.Hudspeth’s appeal,I want to add two things in particular.Mr.Hudspeth has recently received honours in the Cambridge University tripos.He was then made a Scholar of Queen’s College, Cambridge.The doors to a scholastic position opened before him,with its access to ease and comfortable conditions.But he heard the cry of his people among the hills;he heard the more piercing cry of his Lord, waiting,oh,so patitiently,to see of the travail of His soul,to be satisfied in His love!And he could make only one answer.I have reason to know that he had another offer of a non-scholastic kind which would have brought him an income far beyond any missionary's dream.But he heard again the two-fold cry,and his answer to it was the same as before.Will Hudspeth is not the only loyal,heroic young man we have in the United Methodist ministry,or out of it.I have the faith that one or more of them,when they know the need of Yunnan,will show like magnificent surrender of scholastic and monetary prospect and say,Here I am;send me to Yunnan.

The second thing I want to say is this:I am divulging no secret ,when I say that at the last Missionary Committee,when the needs of Yunnan had been. presented by Mr.Hudspeth,a layman present was so moved by the appalling need of the Miao,that he immediately said that he would himself pay the whole cost of a missionary to those needy tribes for seven years.So no one need keep back his offer with the idea that the £30,000 are not yet raised;and that the means for sending him out are not available. The door is open;it is wide open.Who will enter? Will the young man that reads this do it?

王樹德牧師來信說我在德爾塔號上,第二次去中國,去收養我的地方,這次旅程肯定很美麗。大海平靜得想水塘一樣,天空湛藍而清澈,太陽肯定也非常溫暖。船上所有人都沐浴在陽光下。

我不開心

但是我並不開心,儘管豔陽高照,我的心也是冷的。我很抱歉,但不知道怎的,今天有些灰心喪氣。我也沒辦法。我所深愛的教會她好像辜負了我,她要把我一個人送回中國。十二年前,我們中的三個人一起做苗族的事工。在這十二年裏,教堂學校和信徒都以驚人的速度增長。為了應對這一急劇增加的工作,我們精簡了成員。我們現在只有兩個人了,其中的一個——張道惠先生,必須在家裏享受應得的休假。人們,無論世俗的還是教會的,都聽過我山裏孩子們的故事他們的確聽過他們握著我的手說啊,如果我再年輕十歲,我就和你一起去。還有一些男男女女,握著我的手說啊,如果我是長老,我就和你一起去然而並沒有一個人來。現在,我坐在自己的小屋裏,思想那些握手和空話。它們只是握手和客套話嗎?我希望不是但那明顯是擺在我眼前的事實。儘管我迫切的呼籲,但沒有一個大學畢業的人主動提出要陪我。很多人說,如果事情不是這樣,他們就會來。然而‘如果’一直存在,但是始終沒有人來過

對他們的母親感到失望

“在中國同胞把家鄉的教會稱為母會,當我看到山裏的孩子們時,我要告訴他們,我們不能牧養他們有些牧師會走十五天的路來見我,等我快到石門檻的時候,男女老少都會趕來迎接,他們會問的第一個問題是:老師,您是一個人來的嗎? 你的母會沒有派人來幫你嗎?一些的水苗會過來迎接我他們將要求要一個牧長,而我就會想起與家鄉那些男女之間的握手,我也將會知道,如果不是因為那個偉大的如果,那麼就會有人和我一起來那時我只能沉默寡言的看著我的苗族同胞們暗自神傷。我不知是否有一天我心愛的教會會明白,她正在失去一個永遠永遠永遠不會再來的機會。

這是一個奇怪的告別,但這是我唯一能寫的。所有的朋友,再見了”。

我誠摯地向我們維多利亞帕克學院的年輕人,向我們所有還在試用期的牧師和所有32歲以下的門信徒提出這一可悲的呼籲。可悲的是,在我們的年輕人為國王、國家和祖國表現出最英勇的冒險精神和犧牲精神的日子裏,卻沒有看到至少有一種表現——一種代表主耶穌和他所愛並救贖苗人的精神。

我們的教會落在試煉中

關於雲南,我們的教會正在經受試煉,我們的年輕人也在接受試煉。在這個美麗的山區,機會在中國是無與倫比的。我懷疑這在任何國家是否都是一樣的。這是一個為古老但仍然充滿活力的部落服務的機會,在他們面前有著不可估量的未來。這是一個培養門徒的機會,不僅是個別教會的門徒,而是整個國家的。這是一個迅速達到莎士比亞所說的世事無常的機會。我們只是順水推舟但它將為廣大的部落和民族帶來不可磨滅的幸福。遺漏了他們一生的旅程,也遺漏了我們在雲南傳教的人一生的旅程我們的生活將被淺灘和痛苦所環繞。這不僅是一個在雲南傳教的人的真實寫照,更是我們的。對於我們這些在國內傳教的人來說也是如此種什麼因就得什麼果。不把握這次機會不僅僅意味著中國的損失,也是我們國內的損失。像基督一樣敢於看到並抓住機會,並在那裏擴展上帝的國度的精神,在國內同樣是缺乏的。奪過他這一千來,給那有五千的。因為凡有的,還要加給他,叫他有餘。沒有的,連他所有的,也要奪過來。(譯者注:參:太2528-29)

什麼攔阻?

如果有人問,為什麼我們的教會不採取行動?首先有一個問題,我是否能及時回應?因為教會是多人組成的。教會整體是什麼樣子,是由成員決定的。我們每個人在教會裏都很重要我們每個人也都有試煉或攔阻在這種情況下,我們每個人現在都在決定,明天也是,我們最有才華的年輕牧師之一的這一令人難以忘懷的呼籲是應該石沉大海,還是應該得到一個有價值的回應。我說,我們每個人都有重大的責任。因為我們雲南面臨的問題是雙重的,缺乏人手和缺乏錢。後者是我們所有人都可以補救的,無論我們是年輕人還是老年人。如果我們下定決心,不把錢花在個人享樂上,多花在支持在國內外宣揚我們主的王國上,就可以立刻補救。當然,這並不是一個過分的要求,我們應該盡可能多地滿足神的心意,我們至少要像愛我們自己一樣愛主。如果每一個教會都遵循這一原則,我們就不應該缺少錢,這也會使我們能夠抓住每一個機會,尤其是在中國、非洲和我們親愛的祖國30 ,000英鎊傳教基金的特別呼籲將在幾個月內得到完全回應。

我們的最大需要

我們需要一個更大的收入做為我們的傳教基金。但想到我們的需要是某種更重要、更基本、更無價的東西,就很悲傷。就是那些男女一次又一次地聽到那可憐的、不斷重複的神的呼召:我可以差遣誰呢?誰肯為我們去呢?並像年輕的以賽亞那樣回應:我在這裏請差遣我我們不相信今天的年輕基督徒對他們的主不如他們的祖先忠誠。我們擔心在這件事上,古老的哀歎是真實的,以色列卻不認識、我的民卻不留意。在這裏,罪惡是由於缺乏思考而造成的,而不是由於信心軟弱。促使一些年長的傳教士從事傳教工作的動機可能是這件事對年輕一代沒有吸引力,但如果他們將問題想清楚,他們會發現新的動機是那麼迫切,那麼神聖,那麼令人信服,那麼古老的動機。如果有機會的話,過去是,現在也應該至少有同樣的傳教服務。舊的命令仍然有效。你們往普天下去,傳福音給萬民聽是對我們所有人的命令。問題不在於,我該服從嗎?既然這樣,為什麼我不服從呢?我必須去,除非我的主明確地對我說,這條路不適合你”,否則我們應該順服。把我們自己從共同的義務中解脫出來,直到我們聽我們的主在莊嚴的寶座上中釋放我,使我們與他同在。我想問每一個年輕的基督徒,讀到這篇文章,你有沒有得到你救主的應許,去中國或非洲當傳教士?請停下來,並堅持不懈地在你的內心深處尋找,直到你得到一個明確的答案。

關於王樹德先生的呼籲,我想特別補充兩點王樹德先生剛剛獲得了劍橋大學文學學位後來成為劍橋女王學院的學者。通往學術職位的大門在他面前敞開,這將讓他獲得優裕的條件。但他聽見他的民在大山中呼喊;他聽見更深切的呼喊聲主的呼求,他等待著,哦,如此耐心,看到他靈魂的苦痛,在他的愛中得到滿足!他只能給出一個答案。我有理由知道,他有另一個非學術性的使命,這會給他帶來的收穫遠遠超出任何傳教士的夢想。但是他又聽到了那兩次的呼求,他的回答和以前一樣。王樹德不是我們聖道公會牧師中唯一的忠誠、英勇的年輕人,也不是其中唯一的英雄。我相信,他們中的一個或多個人,當他們知道雲南的需要時,也會放棄宏偉的學術和金錢前景,並且說,我在這裏,把我送到雲南去。

我想說的第二件事是:我並沒有洩露什麼秘密,當我在上一次的傳教委員會上說話,當王樹德先生介紹雲南的需要時,在場的一位門徒被苗族的驚人需要所感動,他立即說他要奉獻七年的所有費用給這些有需要的部落傳教。因此,沒有人需要用3萬英鎊還沒籌到的想法來搪塞他的提議,而且沒法把他送出去,大門是敞開著的,誰來參加?讀到這封信的年輕人會去做嗎?

1948年澳洲内地会派遣传教士来华信息

 澳洲内地会将派教士来华

(雪梨十二日中央社电)澳洲中国内地传教会,本年对遣派传教士九人(五男四女)至中国传教,此为该会本于此间举行年会时所宣布者,此九传教士,即将学习中文囗音,学习我国语言,约于九月首途赴华,此外前曾于贵州苗民区传教之赫同夫妇与会于广西、四川传教十五年之罗伯特教士,亦将返华工作,本日会议中,将于九月来华之二青年会员费吉囗氏囗卫贞叶女士,均会就彼等为何愿献身传教工作一节,发表谈话。赫同夫妇与罗伯特亦曾讲述囗等前在华工作之囗囗,会毕并曾放映描述贵州、四川、山西、云南、西藏等省传教工作囗影片,该传教会现共有澳籍教士囗十一人在华传教。

 Work Among the Tribes

Roughly speaking between 102-103 Long.and 25-26 Lat.,the Gospel has been preached to thousands of Lesu,Nosu,Kopu,Hwa Miao,Laka,and Tai;some hundreds of the Laka only have responded, and very few of the Tai.But amongst the former tribes over twenty thousand have heard intelligently and are adherents.About four thousand have been baptised and many are waiting instruction and examination. 

Scattered about these mountain regions are some seventy or eighty chapels,where services are held every Lord's day,and in scores of villages a meeting for prayer and Bible reading is held each evening.

At the first preaching there was a great rush and fervour,and the bag has now been well shaken.Still not many have given up,the majority have progressed until we have churches that and missionary or pastor might be thankful for. 

These people love to sing and of course we responded. It was not long before the people mastered Hymn book No.1,then the missionary set to work on book No.2:afterwards a decent sized supplement was called for.It is usual to have about ten hymns in a service,and as a result there are few dull minutes,more especially as we have two or three addresses.He would be a queer missionary or evangelist who insisted upon taking the whole service.The local preacher is much in evidence.Very often a hard working farmer can give as illuminating an address as the evangelist.One was helped lately by hearing a village preacher who took his appointment in the central church.He was preaching on Jonah,and made quite a point of the words,"Now the Lord had prepared a great fish," he said,"then if the Lord had arranged this of course it could be done."These preachers put their thinking caps on,and many come with a well thought out message.During the last few years Bible-schools have been constantly held.In each station evangelists,preachers,and leaders meet together and have from a week to a month's Bible study,prayer and song.With the exception of the evangelists all bring in their own food,purchase study books,and from early morning they are at it.Owing to the bandit nuisance the missionaries have been away from their stations,unable to travel,so these schools have not been as frequent as we would like,but it is a most important branch of the work. 

It is the custom in the home-lands for many Christians to leave the reading and study of the Revelation to a more convenient season and to accept the verdict of many ministers,“that as there is so much difference of opinion,how can we hope to understand it?”Our people will not be put off with that,and a school was called to study the Book.The more difficult the Scripture the more they want to study it. 

There is not half enough literature available for the tribes.The Lesu have the Gospels of Matthew and Luke the Laka and Nosu whose dialects are akin,read Mark,which was translated for the former tribe.Now the Gospel of Luke is in preparation for the Nosu.The Kopu tribe has the Gospel of Mark only while the Hwa Miao have the New Testament,also a metrical version of the Psalms Kings of Israel and Judah,Bible stories from Moses to Daniel.There are catechisms for each tribe,but little else owing to the fact that pressure of work prevents the workers from making progress in this important service. 

Of recent years some of the tribal young men are reading more Chinese.A few copies of “The Christian Intelligencer,” “Happy Childhood,”and “Bible Magazine,”are taken.Pilgrim's Progress,a few N.T.Commentaries, an Exposition of Genesis,etc.,have been sold.It is only the lack of dollars which prevents more of this literature being sold to these hill tribes,many of whom are often at their wit's end to find food to eat. 

The schools are slowly making progress,and when a better class of teacher is forthcoming the results will correspond.We are working on to this end,and in the Kao-teng at Sa-Pu-Shan,there are representatives of eight tribes.Our aim is to make the work as self-supporting as possible.It is a rule that all evangelists and primary teachers have their house,food, firing and lighting,provided by the church and school a salary ranging from twenty to thirty dollars per year being paid by the mission.In some cases the school has to find part of the teacher’s salary.

For a few years some of the Lesu have gone to help in a work near Sz-mao,twenty-three days’ journey from their homes with good results, while some Hwa-Miao have helped in another direction.We encourage this Home-Missionary service,for it stirs up zeal all round.

One recent development is that in the Hwa-Miao work elders have been appointed at a few outstations,to adminiser the Sacrament,and take more responsibility for the spiritual work in the churches.This phase of the work is still in its infancy,but is working well,and the missionary in charge keeps in close touch with them.It is obviously impossible for any missionary to visit the outstations more than once or twice a year,even when there are no bandits about,and it seems unfair for the people to wait until he arrives before meeting at the Lord's table.

There are four central Stations,viz.,Ta-ku for the Lesu.Laka and Tai tribes; Sa-lao-wu for the Nosu;Hsin-shao for the Ko-pu and Nosu living in the district;Sa-pu-shan for the Hwa-Miao.There is still an immense amount of work to be done among the tribes in the West.Men are needed who will go in and stick at the work. 

Why should foreign missionaries only enjoy all this spiritual exhilaration? The only qualification to enjoy such a work,is,an educated mind,and a heart bursting with love for the people who are not as wild () as is imagined;then to take off your gown and work.It is not any old duffer who will do for tribes’ work.
